Spiritual Climate of Cambodia
From the mid-1960s to 1989, Cambodians endured guerilla warfare, war, and the Khmer Rouge reign of terror (1975-79). Physical and emotional scars remain as a result. Corruption is ingrained. The country has a serious problem with trafficking of persons for sexual exploitation and forced labor. Spirit shrines are a common sight. Buddhism strongly opposes any ideological rival. Christians have been allowed to worship openly only since 1990.
