Political uncertainty, war and a series of natural and economic disasters have broken down old feudal structures of State and Church and made Ecuadorians more receptive to the Gospel. The Catholic Church has seen its privileged position eroded as well as a rapid increase of evangelical groups. There has been some intimidation against Evangelicals.
